– Auburn Study Shows Super 7+ to Be Faster/More Cost Effective Than Seven Percent Tincture of Iodine-
MADISON, Wis., Oct. 1, 2013 – At the World Dairy Expo, Innovacyn Inc. today announced the launch of Super 7+ Navel Dip, an umbilical cord dry-out and protective solution for newborn animals. The iodine-free formula of alkaline electrolyzed water speeds the drying process and protects the umbilical cord. Super 7+ comes in two
sizes – a gallon jug and a pint trigger bottle, and can be applied to large animals using a dip cup/squeeze bottle. The liquid includes a brown dye to help identify treated animals.
Innovacyn funded Auburn University for a clinical study comparing Super 7+ and seven percent tincture of iodine. The study, which utilized 100 female neonatal calves, took place on-animal and in vitro. Findings included:
Faster dry-down times – Dipping with Super7+ Navel Dip increased the percentage of calves having a dry umbilical cord by 30% over that of tincture of iodine
No infection – The umbilical remnants of all calves utilized in the study had no evidence of infection
No irritation – There was no evidence of dermal irritation around the skin surrounding the umbilicus or any other area that may have been in contact with Super7+ Navel Dip
Lower cost – A cost analysis found Super 7+ Navel Dip to be more cost effective than tincture of iodine.
Complete results of the study will be presented by Dr. Julie Gard, DVM and associate professor of clinical studies at Auburn University, at next month’s annual meeting of the United States Animal Health Association.
Unlike tincture of iodine, Super 7+ Navel Dip has negligible cytotoxicity, and is non-flammable and non-corrosive. This advanced hypertonic solution can also be used directly on calves whose umbilical cords were torn off at birth, creating an effective barrier. In addition, the safety profile of Super 7+ ensures that employees and the environment will not be exposed to any dangerous chemicals. The product has no special handling requirements except for following the proper precautions indicated on the label, and does not require hazardous material paperwork or hazard shipping fees.
“We’ve tested Super 7+ on hundreds of calves and haven’t had a single navel infection or abscess. Dry-down times are much faster than iodine, with a whole lot less hassle,” said Cody, the herd manager of a 2,000-head Holstein dairy in Michigan that has been using Super7+ since November 2012.
This product has been cleared by the Agricultural Department of the State of California as a topical-use, umbilical cord dry-out and protection solution for newborn animals.
“Our key criteria in creating Super 7+ was safety – we wanted to make a navel dip that was safer for the animal, safer for the worker applying the product, and safer for the environment,” said Scott Hand, technical manager of Innovacyn. “At last, you can move on from the shortages, skin irritations and fees/paperwork that come with iodine and instead speed up your dry-down times.”
Super 7+ has an expected 24-month shelf life. The product can be used on cattle, swine, sheep, horses, goats and dogs. Dairies, herd managers and store owners can order the product through their Innovacyn/Vetericyn dealer or by calling Innovacyn customer service at (866) 318-3116.
