How Horse Liniment Supports Post-Activity Recovery
After training, riding, or a competition, horses may experience temporary muscle soreness, joint pain, or stiffness. A horse liniment can be a useful part of post-activity care because it helps refresh the muscles after strenuous movement and supports comfort.
For persistent swelling, signs of injury, or discomfort that does not improve, consult your veterinarian. Liniment is intended for temporary muscular soreness and joint comfort, not as a substitute for veterinary treatment.

What is meant when you say that Vetericyn® Liniment “tests free”?
This means that Vetericyn® Liniment contains no ingredients that would result in a positive blood or urine analytical test for non-permitted substances in race or show animals (if ingested or licked). Since there are no banned substances and no steroids or antibiotics, Vetericyn® Hoof Care tests free for competitive animals.
Is Vetericyn® Liniment still good if it freezes? How would you know a bottle of Vetericyn® Liniment was frozen?
Vetericyn® Liniment may show signs of ingredient separation if frozen. There are no known safety concerns if using the product if it has been frozen
Can Vetericyn® Liniment be used with another product, medicine, or therapeutic products?
Vetericyn® Liniment is to be used per label indications. Vetericyn® Liniment has no known contraindications and no known negative drug interactions. We do not recommend applying other topical treatments, ointments, or additional anti-inflammatory products in conjunction with Vetericyn® Liniment.
Can Vetericyn® Liniment be used with a wrap?
Vetericyn® Liniment was formulated to be used with a wrap if desired. When using wraps with topical treatments, it is important to evaluate the area for any irritation. Although unlikely, discontinue use if irritation occurs.
What makes Vetericyn® Liniment unique from other equine liniments?
While menthol is the active ingredient in most liniments, what truly sets Vetericyn apart is its formula. A soothing emulsion delivers encapsulated menthol for sustained release, while skin conditioners like Vitamin E enhance ingredient delivery and condition the coat. Botanical extracts arnica and bisabolol help calm and relieve tired muscles. The non-greasy, easy-to-apply formula also helps stimulate micro-circulation for faster recovery and no tacky after-feel.
Can you use Vetericyn® Liniment for other areas on the animal?
Vetericyn® Liniment is intended for use on the equine muscles and is most effective in the lower extremities. It may be used on areas such as the knee, leg, or other muscles and joints where temporary soreness, ache, or stiffness is present.
Is there anything I can do to help speed up recovery time?
Application right after strenuous activity is recommended for best results. If recovery is prolonged or stalled, consult with your veterinarian.
How do I know if Vetericyn® Liniment is working?
Vetericyn® Liniment will work instantly, and the user should use caution when applying with bare hands as the warm/cold sensation will be noticed almost instantly anywhere the product has made contact with skin. This cooling and warming sensation is part of the product’s quick painrelief experience.
How does Vetericyn® Liniment work?Vetericyn® Liniment contains a micro-encapsulated blend of menthol, botanicals, and skin conditioners to activate muscle and joint recovery as a counterirritant. It melts on contact and works quickly to reduce swelling and pain of sore muscles and joints, helping to relieve stiffness and soreness caused by strenuous activity. It is designed to penetrate the skin surface and provide temporary support where applied.
Does Vetericyn Liniment give a cooling sensation or heat sensation?
The main active ingredient in Vetericyn Liniment is Menthol. Menthol initially gives a sensation of cooling. However, since it is a known counterirritant, it works by causing the skin to feel cool and then warm. As blood flow improves to the area after application, the sensation of “heat” is felt. This is especially true if the area is wrapped. Our liniment should never be “cut” with any other additive.
Is Vetericyn® Liniment Safe to use on horses with sensitive skin?
Yes! Vetericyn® Liniment has added skin conditioners that help to improve skin and coat condition when applied. It does not have any harsh chemicals and its formula is enriched with botanical extracts, Vitamin E, and conditioning agents that are gentle on all skin types. It is not recommended to be applied over cuts, abrasions, or skin irritations that are already present.
Do gloves need to be used when applying Vetericyn® Liniment?
Gloves are not needed when applying Vetericyn® Liniment, which was formulated to be gentle enough for all skin types. Because the product works instantly, the user may wish to apply with gloves if they are sensitive to menthol or dislike the hot/cold sensation designed for the product.
Is Vetericyn Liniment® safe to use under wraps & bandages?
Vetericyn® Liniment can easily be used under wraps and bandages. If you are not familiar with wrapping your horses’ legs, discuss proper technique with your veterinarian or experienced equestrian professional. When wrapping legs, it is best practice to monitor the animal closely to make sure the wrap is not done too tightly or incorrectly as this can scurf the skin. It is not recommended to use Vetericyn® Liniment in conjunction with any other products while wrapping.
Can Liniment be used on dogs?
Yes, you can use liniment on dogs. However, as this product is formulated primarily for horses, please make sure it is used on intact skin and not on wounds or skin irritations. We suggest trying a small amount first to see how the dog tolerates the warming/cooling sensation. Please note it should not be licked and while menthol can be a natural lick deterrent, if your dog is licking, discontinue use.
